Violence in Classrooms and the Role of Social Media: Minister Valditara’s Perspective
Recent incidents such as the stabbing of a teacher by a student in Centocelle and a thwarted stabbing in Lamezia Terme have brought the spotlight back on violence in classrooms and the damages caused by social networks. Minister Valditara addressed this issue on ‘Porta a Porta’ on Rai 1:
According to Valditara, the use of social media should be restricted, following the Kids Act introduced by Europe. He emphasized the importance of positive role models and mentioned a silver medal awarded to a student who saved a French teacher in Bergamo. “Emulation is very dangerous, including on social media,” said Valditara, highlighting the need for educating students on responsible social media usage and psychological support.
Promoting a Healthy Digital Environment: A Call to Action for Parents
Valditara also called on families to play a crucial role in addressing the issue. He stressed the significance of educating children about the correct use of social media and mobile phones, as well as the risks associated with them. “If your child spends hours on a cellphone, it’s harmful. Parents need to step in and help,” he added.
He urged parents to monitor their children’s internet activities and be aware of the potential dangers online. “There is a lot of inappropriate content on the internet that promotes violence and self-harm. Let’s protect our youth and work together as schools and families to ensure their safety,” Valditara concluded.
